All Systems Go for MySQL Conference
In a few weeks I'm headed out to my 4th MySQL Conference. Typically I get all my travel/lodging set up way in advance but this year is different and I just got the last piece into place today. Yikes!
I haven't had much time this year for pre-conference MySQL posts, which tend to get more frequent leading up to the conference. I guess there is still two full weeks to get back into groove before I head out.
I'm looking forward to the conference for a few reasons (in no particular order):
- Presentations: I'm excited for a number of presentations on the schedule. As I look back over the years I think the thing I've enjoyed the most in presentations is hearing how other folks are using MySQL to solve their data storage/access problems. My first conference in (Orlando, 2004) very heavily featured the work Travelocity/Sabre was doing with MySQL. I found it very inspiring to listen to them talk about millions and billions of data points for a single flight search. Last year I got a lot of mileage out of how Yahoo! scales. It changed how we decided to do things at work.
- People: I'm really looking forward to catching up with other attendees. Some who have been friends over the years and some who I haven't yet met outside of mailing lists/forums/PlanetMySQL.
- Weather: We had some spring weather, but it is back below freezing these past few days in Boston. Am hoping California will be a break from that.
- Blogging: I'm actually not sure how much I'll write during the conference yet. Over the years there has been a core group of bloggers who try to capture good details of the sessions they attend. I've gotten feedback from folks who really appreciate this because they cannot attend, or it makes for great future reference. For me it makes it harder to relax and enjoy the conference. Will see how things settle out with that.
I am interested to see what the feeling is this year, as it is the first post-Community/Enterprise -split conference. Will the balance between open source and business have shifted one way or another? Will these nagging thoughts get stronger, or be somehow be satisfied?
I'll see you there (except for the folks who I won't).

I bet if you video'd the sessions, you'd be able to provide the content folks want while still being able to relax....
(that's what I'm doing anyway)
